Game of Thrones first premiered on April 17th, 2011 in the United States. The show has gone on to become a pop culture phenomenon and also one of the most popular shows in history. 3) What does Jorah Mormont Tell Daenerys Targaryen that there is no word for in Dothraki?
In the very first episode, Jorah Mormont tells Daenerys Targaryen that there is no word for “Thank You” in Dothraki. This came after Dany was gifted a horse by Khal Drogo and wanted to thank him.
4) Who was the first Stark direwolf to die?
The first Stark direwolf to die was Lady, which was Sansa Stark‘s. It was originally supposed to be Nymeria after it attacked Joffrey but the direwolf was able to escape. As a result, Lady was killed in Nymeria’s place. This came during the second episode of season 1.
5) Who is the Septa that accompanies Arya and Sansa to King’s Landing?

Some Extra Trivia About The First Season
Here are some additional tidbits about the season that we found interesting but couldn’t find any room for on the quiz. This includes details on the original pilot that never aired, award recognition and also behind-the-scenes facts.
Details On The Original Pilot
The producers originally shot a pilot of Game of Thrones that was much different than what we ended up with. This included Tamzin Merchant playing the role of Daenerys Targaryan and Jennifer Ehle playing Catelyn Stark. HBO decided to rewrite and reshoot the pilot, replacing Merchant with Emilia Clarke and Ehle with Michelle Fairley.
In an interview, George R.R Martin revealed that he filmed a cameo appearance for that unaired pilot. That cameo was scrapped and he never ended up appearing in any of the subsequent seasons of the show. He was originally going to appear in the background of the wedding between Daenerys and Khal Drogo. George did not make a cameo in any other episode in the series.
David Benioff noted that the reshoot and rewrite allowed them to learn from their mistakes. They eventually got it right and Season 1 was off and running. Can you imagine if they didn’t end up reshooting that stuff and we didn’t get Emilia Clark as Danny?
Ian McNeice originally played the role of Illyrio Mopatis in the pilot but was replaced by Roger Allam in season 1.
Richard Ridings originally played the role of Gared in the pilot but was he replaced by Dermot Keaney in season 1.
Jamie Campbell Bower originally played the role of Ser Waymar Royce in the pilot but he was replaced by Rob Ostlere in season 1.
Tom McCarthy directed the original pilot episode but Tim Van Patten ended up taking over after it was scrapped.
Some Additional Behind-The-Scenes Tidbits From The Season
HBO officially bought the rights to the “A Song of Fire & Ice” series in 2007. The series could have potentially come out sooner but it was delayed by the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike.
Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) ended up adopting the dog that played her direwolf (Lady) in the show. The dog sadly passed away in 2017.
During season 1, the decapitated head of George W. Bush appeared on a spike. HBO ended up apologizing for this and the showrunners said it was nothing political and only them re-using props to save money.
During a Reddit AMA, Sean Bean revealed that cast kicked around the severed head of Ned Stark like a football while they were filming the scene of his death.
Filming for the season was primarily done in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Malta.
“The Pointy End” (episode 8) was written by George R.R Martin.
Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) was the first actor that was cast in the series. He went on to win multiple awards for his performance over all 8 seasons.
Critical Response
The show was nominated for 13 Emmy Awards. For this role as Tyrion Lannister, Peter Dinklage won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Dinklage would subsequently get nominated in this category for every season of the show. The show also won the Emmy that year for Outstanding Main Title Design.
The first season is rated 91% on the TOMATOMETER on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 critical reviews. It also is rated 96% on the audience score with over 6000 votes.
