Here are some additional tidbits about the second season that we couldn’t find a spot for on our quiz. This includes tidbits about the casting and critical acclaim of the season.
Casting
- The character of Melisandre was introduced during the second season, played by Carice van Houten. During an interview, van Houten revealed that the producers originally asked her to audition for the role of Cersei Lannister in the first season but she had a scheduling conflict. The producers ended up asking her again to audition for the role of Melisandre and they gave her the part.
- During an interview, Liam Cunningham revealed that he unsuccessfully auditioned for a role in the first season. Producers told him that they have more roles coming for season 2 and eventually gave him the role of Davos Seaworth.
- Mahershala Ali revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he auditioned for the role of Xaro Xhoan Daxos. He lost out on the role to Nonso Anozie. Ali said to Jimmy Kimmel that he completely bombed the audition, which explains why the Academy Award winner didn’t get the role.
- Gwendoline Christie revealed in an interview that she dropped 21 pounds before her audition for season 2. She knew that she had to be ripped in order to even be considered for the part of Brienne of Tarth. It ended up working out as she was cast in the role.
- During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Gemma Whelan revealed that her audition for Yara Greyjoy in season 2 was “uncomfortable”. She had to recreate the scene where Yara picks up Theon Greyjoy on a horse. Theon “works away on” Yara, not knowing that she is his sister. Gemma says that she had to recreate that scene during her audition but with a chair, instead of a horse and with no Alfie Allen.
- Ian Whyte took over the role of Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane from Conan Stevens, who played the role in season 1.

- Season 2 was mostly filmed in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Croatia, and Iceland.
- Filming of the season took 106 days. There were two different crews, the ‘Dragon crew’ and the ‘Wolf crew’.
- George R.R Martin wrote, “Blackwater” (episode 9). This was the second episode in the series that he wrote. His writing obviously influenced the entire series but he wrote these specific episodes for television.
- Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) is the only actor who appears in all 10 episodes in the season. Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) both came in second place, appearing in 9 episodes each.
